What is the Water Intake Calculator?

A water-intake calculator estimates how much water you should drink each day based on body weight and lifestyle. Toollyz Water Intake Calculator runs entirely in your browser. The baseline is 30 ml per kilogram of body weight — a common evidence-based rule of thumb for healthy adults that lines up well with the Institute of Medicine's adequate-intake values (2.7 L women, 3.7 L men) for an average-weight person. On top of the baseline it adds +350 ml for every 30 minutes of exercise, +500 ml in hot weather (+1 L in very hot / desert climates), +300 ml during pregnancy and +700 ml when breastfeeding. Output is shown in millilitres, fluid ounces (US), 500 ml bottles and the user-configurable glass size (default 250 ml), with a per-hour rate derived from the user's awake hours and a visual schedule. The breakdown panel shows where the litres come from as colour-coded segments. The Honest Caveats panel is prominent: individual needs vary widely; food provides ~20% of daily water; chugging far above your need can cause hyponatraemia. Frequently asked questions

Where does "30 ml per kg" come from?

It's a widely-used clinical rule of thumb (Holliday–Segar for maintenance fluid, adjusted for adults). For a 70 kg adult that's ~2.1 L of plain water, which lines up well with the Institute of Medicine's adequate-intake values once food water is factored in.

Does this count tea, coffee, juice or food?

No — the output is total water-equivalent intake. In a typical Western diet, ~20% comes from food and the rest from beverages. Tea and coffee count too; the mild diuretic effect of caffeine is generally over-stated and doesn't outweigh the water in the cup.

Why +350 ml per 30 minutes of exercise?

It approximates the American College of Sports Medicine's recommendation of 0.4–0.8 L per hour of moderate exercise. For very long endurance sessions (>2 hours) you may need significantly more plus electrolytes.

What's hyponatraemia?

Low blood sodium caused by drinking far more water than your kidneys can excrete (~0.7–1 L per hour). It's rare but dangerous and most often hits long-distance runners who over-drink plain water. Trust thirst as a guide; don't force litres to hit an arbitrary number.

What about pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Pregnancy adds about 300 ml/day to a non-pregnant baseline; breastfeeding adds about 700 ml/day to replace the water lost in milk. Toollyz uses those constants directly, but check with your OB / midwife — individual needs vary.

Why ask about awake hours?

To compute a per-hour drinking rate that's realistic — drinking your full target in the last hour before bed is rough on sleep. If you sleep 8 hours, you have 16 awake hours to space the intake.

Does climate really change requirements?

Yes — in hot or very hot environments you lose more water through sweat and breathing. The defaults (+500 ml hot, +1 L very hot) are conservative; outdoor work in 35°C+ heat can easily add 1.5–3 L on top.

Is the 250 ml glass standard?

It's a common European/Indian glass size. US "cups" are ~240 ml, "tall glasses" 300–350 ml. Adjust the Glass size field to match what you actually drink from for an accurate schedule.

Is this medical advice?
