What is the Tip Calculator?

A tip calculator works out a gratuity by percentage and (optionally) splits the total evenly between diners. Toollyz Tip Calculator runs entirely in your browser. The hero shows four live cards — bill, tip, total and per-person — that update as you change inputs. Sliders and quick-pick chips cover the most common tip rates (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 22%, 25%, 30%); the slider goes up to 40% for generous tips. Bill split is a numeric input with +/− buttons (1–100 people). The rounding panel offers Off, Nearest 1, Nearest 5, Nearest 10 and Round-up — when rounding is on, the displayed Tip absorbs the rounding (so the rounded total is exactly Bill + Tip rather than Tip + Bill plus an awkward few cents). 23 ISO 4217 currencies are formatted with `Intl.NumberFormat`. The notes panel includes region-specific tipping advice (US, Europe, Asia) — useful when travelling. Toollyz has no backend; the last bill, tip percentage and split persist in localStorage on this device only.

How to use it

  1. Type the bill amount and pick a currency.
  2. Slide the tip percentage or pick one of the common-tip chips (15 / 18 / 20%).
  3. Use +/− buttons to set the number of people splitting the bill.
  4. Pick a rounding mode — the tip absorbs the rounding so the total is clean.

Benefits

  • Four live hero cells: bill, tip, total, per-person amount.
  • Quick-tip chips (0 / 5 / 10 / 15 / 18 / 20 / 22 / 25 / 30%) plus a 0–40% slider.
  • Bill split with +/− buttons (1–100 people) and per-person amount in the hero.
  • Five rounding modes: off, nearest 1 / 5 / 10, round-up.
  • Tip absorbs the rounding so Total = Bill + Tip exactly when rounding is on.
  • 23 currencies via `Intl.NumberFormat` with locale-correct symbols.
  • Region-aware tipping notes (US / Europe / Asia) in the About section.
  • 100% private — Toollyz has no backend, the form saves to localStorage on this device only.

Frequently asked questions

How is the tip calculated?

Tip = tipPercentage × bill. Total = bill + tip. When rounding is on, the total is rounded first and the tip is recomputed as (rounded total − bill) so the math stays consistent.

Why does the tip change when I switch rounding modes?

Because the displayed tip absorbs the rounding. If your bill is $42 and the tip is 18% ($7.56), the raw total is $49.56. With Nearest 1 rounding, the total snaps to $50 and the tip becomes $8 — easier to leave in cash without needing change.

What's a fair restaurant tip?

It depends on the region. The US norm is 15% for adequate service, 18–20% for good and 20%+ for excellent. Many European countries include service in the bill — round up or leave 5–10% on top. Tipping is uncustomary in much of East Asia. Use the Notes panel for a quick guide.

Should I tip on the pre-tax amount or the post-tax total?

Conventions vary. In the US, tipping on the post-tax total is most common; in the UK and Australia tipping on the net (pre-VAT) value is more usual. Toollyz Tip Calculator tips on whatever you enter as the bill — feed it the value you want.

How does bill split work?

The total (tip included) is divided by the number of people. Toollyz doesn't round per person — if the total is $50 split 3 ways, each pays $16.67. To round the per-person amount, set the people count to 1 and split manually with your bank.

What does Round-up do?

Always rounds the total up to the next whole unit, regardless of how close the cents are to the next integer. Handy when you want to leave a generous tip and pay in cash without dealing with change.

Does it support zero-decimal currencies like JPY?

Yes — `Intl.NumberFormat` handles those automatically, showing no decimals. ¥4,200 and ₩42,000 display cleanly without trailing zeros.

Can I tip more than 40%?

The slider tops out at 40% but the input field accepts up to 100. For private services (deliveries, taxis on a generous holiday, exceptional one-off cases) people sometimes tip well above 40% — the calculator doesn't stop you.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Toollyz has no backend — calculations run in your browser. The last bill, tip and split save to localStorage on this device only.

Is this Tip Calculator free?

Completely free with no signup and no limits. Calculate as many tips as you like — privately in your browser.
