What is a password generator?
A password generator is a tool that produces unpredictable strings of characters to use as account credentials. A good generator uses a cryptographically secure source of randomness so each password is statistically impossible to guess — even with massive computing power.
How secure are these generated passwords?
Toollyz generates every password using the Web Crypto API — the same standard cryptography modern browsers use for TLS keys, web authentication and signing. Combined with a long character pool, even a 20-character random password takes centuries to crack with today's hardware.
Are generated passwords stored or transmitted?
No. Every password is generated locally in your browser — no network request leaves your device. Recent passwords are only saved in your browser's localStorage on your own machine, and only if you click Generate. We never see, log or transmit any password.
What is password entropy?
Entropy is a measure of how unpredictable a password is, expressed in bits. Each bit doubles the number of possible passwords an attacker must try. A 60-bit password takes a million times more guesses than a 40-bit one. Generally: <40 bits is weak, 65+ is strong, 90+ is very strong, 128+ is excellent.
What makes a strong password?
Length first, randomness second, character diversity third. A 20-character random password from a full alphanumeric+symbol pool yields about 130 bits of entropy — beyond reach for any realistic brute-force attack. Avoid personal info, common words and reused passwords.
Are passphrases safer than passwords?
For memorability they're often better. A 5-word random passphrase (e.g. 'velvet-rain-trumpet-river-onion') has around 65 bits of entropy — strong, hard to brute-force and far easier to type than a random symbol soup. Use a passphrase for your password manager master key.
Should I use symbols in passwords?
Yes when the site allows them — they roughly double the per-character pool size and add bits of entropy per character. But length matters more: a 24-character alphanumeric password is stronger than a 12-character one with symbols. Use both when you can.
How long should my passwords be?
For most accounts, aim for 16+ characters. For high-value accounts (email, banking, password manager), aim for 20+ random characters or a 6+ word passphrase. Length compounds entropy faster than complexity.
Can hackers crack generated passwords?
Not realistically. A 16-character random password from the full keyboard pool has ~104 bits of entropy. Even at a trillion guesses per second (well beyond current real-world attacks), it would take longer than the age of the universe to brute-force.
