Why convert PNG to WebP?
WebP typically gives 25–35% smaller files than PNG (and 25–34% smaller than JPG for photos) at visually similar quality. Modern browsers all support it, so it's the easiest way to make pages load faster without losing quality.
What does the quality slider do?
WebP is a lossy format (with a lossless mode that's still smaller than PNG). The slider controls how much detail is preserved versus how small the file gets. 80–90% is usually indistinguishable from the original for photos.
Will it preserve transparency?
Yes — if your PNG has an alpha channel, the WebP output keeps it. Set the quality high (90%+) for transparent UI assets where edge fidelity matters.
Why is my WebP not smaller than the PNG?
Very small images (icons, tiny screenshots) sometimes encode larger as WebP because of overhead. Try a lower quality, or accept that for small assets PNG can be competitive.
What's the difference between lossy and lossless WebP?
Lossy WebP discards detail to shrink the file (controlled by the quality slider). Lossless WebP keeps every pixel and is still typically 25% smaller than PNG. Modern browsers handle both transparently.
Do all browsers support WebP?
Yes. Every modern desktop and mobile browser supports WebP. If you need to support very old browsers, keep a PNG fallback.
